Taking Flight

This week in 1903, we learned to fly! The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, made the first successful flight in history in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their aircraft was a gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight. Four attempts at flight were made on that first day of flight, the record being 852 feet and 59 seconds. Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and developed an interest in aviation after learning of the glider flights of the German engineer Otto Lilienthal in the 1890s.
