The Brooklyn Bridge, with its unprecedented length and two stately towers, opened on this day in 1883. Dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world,” it connected the massive population centers of Brooklyn and Manhattan and changed the course of New York City forever. Spanning the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge measures 1,595 feet and was the first ever wire suspension bridge constructed.
